Beginning this year LezDance members are requested to pay Annual Member Dues separate from Dance Class Fees. The suggested membership dues are $15-$25 annually and they are due by the end of your first dance session (by Oct 22 for the first session).

LezDance is an all-volunteer membership organization and in addition to the great energy that our volunteers give, the membership dues ensure that LezDance will continue to bring dance to lesbians. The Dues specifically help maintain our commitments to web and administrative costs, as well as allow us to host more seasonal community dances! No one will be turned away if she cannot pay the full amount and each member will determine the level of dues she is able to pay.

Thanks for learning more dances with us.
We look forward to another great year and more fun dancing!

* Argentine Tango is an improvisational social dance which originated in Argentina and Uruguay in the late 1800's. Today it is danced all over the world. Tango is versatile, with the power to express a wide range of emotions - from joy to sorrow, nostalgia to fulfillment, sweetness to sarcasm - depending on the music and the mood of the dancers. Elegant, sensuous, complex, and highly addictive, tango requires a relaxed concentration, deep awareness of the music, an attentive, trustful, collaboration between partners and an attentive, respectful cooperation amongst all couples on a shared dance floor.

** Swing is an early style of jazz music popularized by the big bands of the 1930s. It is characterized by flowing rhythms and syncopated timing. Several historical American dances, collectively referred to as Swing dances, developed for dancing to swing jazz and continue to evolve, today. These include Lindy Hop (sometimes called "the Jitterbug"), partner Charleston, Balboa, Blues, and Collegiate Shag. Part of the joy of swing dancing arises from its playful improvisational nature and its gentle and elastic connection between partners. Swing may be danced socially, competitively, or for performance purposes.

*** Both classes will be taught by Max Kepler. Max has been dancing for about thirty years and partner dancing for fifteen. Living in Los Angeles at the peak of the swing craze and Tango revival, she took up both dances in fall of 1997 and has never looked back. In 2000, she started learning to lead in order to teach. She founded the Argentine Tango Group at U.C. San Diego in 2001, and co-hosted a women's practica (weekly Argentine tango practice hour) in 2004. In 2005 she moved to Eugene for graduate school in cognitive neuroscience and continued teaching and dancing at local venues such as Studio B and the Tango Center.

Max's teaching style is highly interactive. In small and mid-sized classes she gives individual attention to each student, as well as providing feedback to the group as a whole on technique for connection, footwork and timing. She incorporates elements from her training in ballet, jazz, Pilates, and rehabilitative fitness education into class exercises that are fun and engaging. She emphasizes proper dance form and a gentle, elastic way of connecting with a partner, essential tools for protection against injury and
promotion of a healthy dancing community.
